Welcome to Matson Biofuels
- Matson Biofuels has developed an innovative, patented, continuous solid catalyst process that can handle feedstocks containing high levels of water and free fatty acids without any pretreatment. The ability to process low quality feedstocks is essential to the economics of biodiesel production, where feedstock cost comprises approximately 75% of the total operating costs.
- These patented catalysts significantly reduce soap formation, producing high quality products in greater yields compared to the conventional process.
- In addition to problems with soap formation, the conventional process utilizes a sodium hydroxide catalyst that contaminates both the biodiesel and glycerol products, requiring significant post-treatment for the end products. Our process eliminates the use of sodium hydroxide and therefore eliminates or significantly reduces a number of unit operations in the production of biodiesel.
- Matson Biofuels has received $167K in an Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant (AFIG) through PA DEP and $140K from the Ben Franklin Technology Partners to build and test a 2.5 million gallon per year system.
- Matson Biofuels is working with Fluid Engineering (Erie, PA), a successful developer and manufacturer of industrial products for the oil, gas, and biofuels markets, among others.
- Initial systems will be constructed and tested in 2011 with full commercialization planned for 2012.
